Freestyle Sunday at Five Pointz 5/20/12

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of being invited to the mecca of graffiti, Five Pointz for their first Freestyle Sunday, the first event of a series of events that the venue will be hosting to celebrate their tenth anniversary.

Admittedly, I couldn’t (and didn’t) stay until the very end, it was a great afternoon of underground hip hop with a ton of very talented and sadly unsigned emcees rocking the mic all day on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. What I have to add is this: Five Pointz is photographer’s dream and can create a bit of sensual overload. God, the photos I want to take of everything!

DJ Milk Money on the 1s and 2s.

Rabbi Darkside rocking it on the mic.

Mariela and Rabbi Darkside warming up the crowd, and going over the ground rules for Freestyle Sunday.

This girl was encouraged to get up on the loading dock/stage to breakdance, and I think it made her day. If it wasn’t the highlight of her life, I don’t know what would be.

A local saxophonist got on the stage to blow.

Queens-based duo Brain SpaceGrey Matter is beat boxing over in the left background and BS has his back to the viewer.

This photographer got up on the stage and spat some old school, MC Lyte-styled lyrics.

This emcee spit rhymes entirely in Spanish, and it was really cool.
Some really interesting graffiti work, I think.
